everything is on loan

6 Jan

I was struggling to fall asleep last night, haunted by fears of things going wrong, of doom and gloom. Out of the blue, God whispered into my ear and explained something very simple:

In this life,  nothing is yours. Everything belongs to Me. Everything you have, everything you ‘own’, your home, your kids, your partner, your health, your money, your talents, your worries, your tears…your own life.everything is on loan from Me. There are some things you get to keep longer, and some things that I might recall quite suddenly. But eventually everything goes back to Me.

There is no point me holding on tightly to things that I have deluded myself that I have some ownership over. There is no point me fearing losing them. If I understand that they are all things that I get to keep for a limited amount of time, to use them for God and with God then I can let go of that fear of losing them.

I can also let go of  jealousy of others.  A business may negotiate a multi-million dollar loan – but should I envy the fact that they got the loan. That huge sum came with requirements and responsibilities, infinitely more complex than a monthly average wage. The multi-millionaires, the business moguls and the pauper living on the street all have the same destiny; when their Creditor demands His final payment.

So if I just bear in mind that this wonderful word has an Owner who has let me live in it and enjoy it (for however long that will be) I will give grateful thanks to Him. Especially as He doesn’t owe me anything.
